The closest archaeological site of significance to Mahahual is Chacchoben. It consists of one main stepped pyramid that you can walk to the top of. The main structure is surrounded by many other low lying structures.

Kohunlich Archaeological Site
The most impressive archaeological site in the area is Kohunlich. Located 1.5 hours from Mahahual this is an extensive site with murals, pyramids and plazas, a great chance of spotting wildlife like howler or spider monkeys.

Dzibanche & Kinichna Archaeological Site
The two most remote archaeological sites lie side by side in dense tropical jungle. Located 2 hours from Mahahual these two sites were of great importance in Mayan times. The ruins have been conquered by nature, making a mystic site even more special.  This 2 for 1 special is definitely worth the drive.
